BMT strives to deliver clarity through complexity and, with this, we start at home. This Reporting Strategy provides the framework on how we will deliver internal reporting that is clean, accurate and best in class.
Purpose and Vision
The Reporting Strategy is designed to unify BMT’s approach to internal reporting, embedding consistent standards for quality, governance, and accessibility while enabling the agility to respond to business needs. The Strategy defines an Internal Reporting Model (IRM) that centralises report access, secures sensitive data, and promotes operational efficiency. This, together, transforms our vast amounts of internal data into reliable reports that inform decision-making, display customer insights and analyse business trends.
Key Strategic Themes
The IRM embodies five strategic themes that align internal reporting with BMT’s organisational vision:
- Customer-Centricity: By consolidating our internal customer needs across BMT, the IRM enhances our ability to anticipate and meet internal reporting specifications, creating more pointed and responsive reports.
- Innovation: The IRM fosters a culture of innovation, providing data-driven insights that enable predictive analytics, new product development, and agile report delivery.
- Operational Efficiency: The centralised Business Reporting Hub reduces siloed business reporting and enhances productivity and teamwork. This means all business customers are looking at the same information across the board and there is only ever one version of the truth.
- Resilience: The IRM’s governance and quality assurance allows BMT’s internal reporting to maintain continuity, reliability and support long-term growth of the business.
- Security: With a centralised Business Reporting Hub, the IRM ensures access to reports is appropriate to individual’s roles and sensitive data is protected in the right way.
Scope and Implementation
The scope of the Reporting Strategy encompasses five core areas essential to BMT’s internal reporting:
- Report Governance: Ensures data security and compliance through structured security levels within the report itself and app and workspace it sits in.
- Report Familiarity: There is a common theme in how all business reports are built, meaning users will understand how to use a new report without specific training for each one.
- Report Reliability: The data in the reports is treated in the same way meaning the same figures are reported across the board without the possibility for different versions of the truth.
- Report Usage Analytics: We know how much each report is used and by who, meaning we can tailor them to their audiences. Any reports not used or where usage is lowered, we ask why and retire any that aren’t needed. This means our reporting suite is always current and adding value.
- Data Mart Dependence: Each report is built on data marts that have been rigorously tested and quality assured. All data is therefore trustworthy and can be relied upon.
Innovation Roadmap
To maintain BMT’s best in class reporting, the Strategy includes a forward-looking roadmap for continuous improvement:
- 2024: Release of a Report Style Guide and Business Reporting Hub
- 2025: Inclusion of customised visuals and programming languages. We will also be putting together training for the business on how to read a Power BI report and some useful tips. We will also launch a Power BI Reporting Community. This will allow for tips and tricks sharing, report writers can ask for advice from peers across the global business, and we will stay on top of additions in the software from Microsoft and share out across the business.
- 2026: Machine learning applications can be included in internal reporting where beneficial
Performance Metrics and Success Indicators
To evaluate the impact of the Reporting Strategy, a scorecard will track core performance metrics, including report accessibility and audience engagement. These indicators will guide ongoing improvements and ensure that internal reporting remains aligned with BMT’s objectives.
Conclusion
The Reporting Strategy serves as a part of a wider blueprint for transforming BMT into a data-driven organisation that is agile, resilient, and customer-focused. By embedding consistent reporting and enabling a culture of report and data literacy, BMT strengthens its position as an industry leader prepared to navigate an ever-evolving digital landscape. This strategy ensures that BMT can deliver exceptional customer value, drive innovation, and achieve operational excellence through responsible reporting operations.
